ORAL CANCERS - A Two Year Survey

Sunila Thomas, Anita Balan A two year survey form February 2000 to January 2002 was conducted among patients who reported to the Out Patient Department of Dental College, Trivandrum, to find the incidence of Oral Cancer. Out of 90379 patients examined, 330 cases were clinically diagnosed and histopathologically confirmed as having Oral Cancer. There was a slight male predilection, with a female ratio of 1.7: 1. The peak age incidence in males was in the fifties while in female in the sixties. The habit and location sub site were analysed. It was noted that there was a direct relation between the type of habit and site of occurrence. |

Oral Pigmentation - A Review

Nalin Kumar, TR Saraswathi Pigments are defined as substances occuring in living matter, which absorb visible light.
They are substances, which possess colour of thier own in their natural state. Pigments differ in origin, chemical constitution and their biological significance. Variations in the normal oral pigmentation can occur due to genetic factors, hormonal imbalances and side effects of drugs. Several endogenous and
exogenous factors, local & systemic may cause dermal and mucosal pigmentation alterations. This article reviews the literature of physiological oral pigmentation in different populations and the various causes of pathologic oral hyperpigmentation. |
